SUMMER COMEBACK: These are the events making their way back to the Pittsburgh-area

PITTSBURGH — The decision wasn’t easy for a lot of communities to cancel beloved holiday events last summer. Now, those big celebrations are coming back, including the Butler Memorial Day parade.

Kayla Naypauer is looking forward to taking her girls to the Butler Memorial Day parade this year after it was canceled last year due to COVID-19.

“I’m excited that it’s coming back. I mean, it’s a good return to normalcy,” Naypauer stated.

The parade will be held in downtown Butler. The community will be able to line up along Main Street to watch. However, no local high schools or bands will be in the parade.

Afterwards, a ceremony will take place in Diamond Park to outline the importance of Memorial Day.

Most state mitigation orders will be lifted on May 31, yet people will still have to be masked up.

Here is a list of returning events this summer:

  • The Big Butler Fair will reopen and launch its fireworks display on July 4.
  • New Castle pushed back its fireworks festival to the fall.
  • Ellwood City canceled its festival this year, but will still have Fourth of July fireworks in Ewing Park.
  • Beaver plans to hold its Fourth of July concert at the Beaver Gazebo. Beaver’s Memorial Day parade will be back this year.
  • Canonsburg’s July Fourth celebration will be moved to Saturday, July 3, since Independence Day falls on a Sunday.
  • The Memorial Day celebration in Richland Township will return as well.
  • Cranberry Township’s Memorial Day celebration will be held Sunday, May 30 at 1 p.m. at Veterans Memorial in North Boundary Park.
