Target one step closer to moving into Pittsburgh’s iconic Kaufmann’s building

PITTSBURGH — The iconic Kaufmann’s building in downtown Pittsburgh will soon transition into a Target.

Developers have continued to move forward with plans for the Target, which is one step closer to opening at Smithfield Street and Fifth Avenue.

The Pittsburgh Planning Commission heard about the overall setup and structure during its meeting Tuesday. The developers are scheduled to go back before the commission next month.

Target Corporate confirmed to Channel 11 News it plans to open a 20,000-square foot store on the first floor of the Kaufmann’s building.

That’s significantly scaled down in comparison to suburban locations, which are typically more than 100,000 square feet.

Kaufmann’s let Macy’s move into the building. However, the building has been vacant since Macy’s left in 2015.

“We need more stores downtown for people to shop, even people who visit Pittsburgh out of town. There’s a lot of hotels, but there is nowhere to shop at unless you’re going to the mall, so this would be an added benefit,” Anita Harris Ibeawchi, of Pittsburgh, said.

Target is expected to open sometime in 2021.

Developer Desmone Architects released the following statement: “The Target project will provide a long-desired amenity to Downtown Pittsburgh’s residents and visitors. It’s fitting that it will occupy the historic Kaufmann’s building, continuing a tradition of retail in that location since the 19th Century.”
