Winter is coming! Here is how Butler PennDOT crews are getting ready

BUTLER COUNTY — Butler PennDOT crews are preparing for this winter season. Each plow truck is geared up and ready to hit the roads.

They have plenty of salt on hand — at least 13,000 tons for the county.

Right now, they have no concerns about the upcoming season.

However, Butler PennDOT officials are still looking to hire more plow truck drivers and are now holding recruiting events.

“This is the first year we’ve done this we know there’s a lot of people out their looking for jobs that speeds up that process,” said Mike Mattis, the Butler County maintenance manager.

Mattis said at the recruiting events, people can get help filling out their application, do an in-person interview and take a test drive.

“And if we like that candidate, we can give them a conditional offer on the spot,” said Mattis

He said they are hiring about a half-dozen more operators to train and have ready for the snow.

However, he also recommends that drivers be ready for winter weather and shared these important tips.

“This winter, I do recommend if you do approach a snowplow, we ask you to stay back 500 feet,” said Mattis. “Don’t try to pass the plows either. Just try to give them room and stay back because they are applying material to help you get through the snow and clearing the roadways.”

For anyone who is interested in working for Butler PennDOT, they are holding another recruiting event on Nov. 9 from noon to 6 p.m. at their main office along New Castle Road.
