Woodland Hills superintendent announces retirement same day as anti-violence group forms in district

The Superintendent of Woodland Hills School District has announced he will retire.

Alan Johnson intends to retire on June 30. He's been with the district since 2011.

The announcement came on the same day a group called the Coalition Against Violence formed to address several shootings involving Woodland Hills students.

"In my community, there's just a whole bunch of violence and a whole bunch of shootings,” said Woodland Hills senior Jayona Moorefield.

This school year has been a tough one for Woodland Hills students.

On a mission to turn it all around and put an end to the violence, the Coalition Against Violence was formed.

"I felt like I needed to stop it because I'm affected by this as well. I lost my friends. I lost my peers -- you know, the people that used to sit next to me in class,” said Moorefield, who is part of the group.

Moorefield, who calls herself an "ambassador of peace"  teamed up with her classmates to present today's anti-violence youth summit, as a way to give students an outlet to speak their minds and help them heal from the trauma they've experienced.

"We're hoping to instill hope and get them to understand that even though these trials and tribulations and tests in their lives, that they're developing a skill set that enables them to overcome anything,” said Woodland Hills Senior/Junior High School acting Principal Candee Nagy

"Honestly, all I can really tell people is: You are the change,” Moorefield said."Myself, I can start the movement, but I can't be the movement."
