Young people being recruited to work the polls in Pittsburgh

PITTSBURGH — Young people in Pittsburgh are being recruited to work the polls on Election Day.

The Poll Hero Project is looking for young people, particularly high school and college-age kids, to help make sure the polls are well-staffed in November. It’s a nationwide movement.

As the COVID-19 pandemic continues to play out, officials said it’s essential for young people to get involved, especially since more than half of the United States' poll workers are 60 years or older.

The concern is that veteran workers will be sitting out over fear of contracting the coronavirus and there will be a shortage when it comes to staffing.

“We need young people to basically fill their shoes this year. You know, a lot of older people don’t feel comfortable coming out with coronavirus the same way they might not want to go to the grocery store, and that’s created real issues when there aren’t enough people to work the polls. Polling stations close,” Lucy Duckworth, Poll Hero Project team lead, said.
