GULF SHORES, Ala. — Three golfers were injured during an unprovoked melee with several camouflage-clad individuals that police said hid in the trees along a fairway at an Alabama golf course on Sunday.
According to the Gulf Shores Police Department, the attack occurred just after 1 p.m. during a tournament at Craft Farms Golf Resort, WKRG reported.
The golfers told police that an air horn sounded during each of their backswings on the course’s third hole, prompting a confrontation with a male that they believed to be either a teenager or a young adult, AL.com reported.
When the confrontation turned physical, several individuals emerged from the adjacent woods and began beating the golfers, injuring all three and leaving one with a severe cut to the head and broken teeth, the news outlet reported.
Gulf Shores Police Lt. Jason Woodruff characterized the altercation as a “straight-up assault,” WKRG reported.
Chad Leonard, the resort’s general manager, told WALA-TV that Sunday’s incident was a first in his 25 years in the golf industry.
“This was completely isolated. These guys could have picked any golf course in the area. We were the unlucky ones,” Leonard told the TV station.
According to WKRG, police have identified the suspected attackers, but their identities have not been released publicly and no charges had been filed by Friday evening.
