Police said a black car pulled up and fired into the crowd on the sidewalk in the area of Kensington and Allegheny avenues, KYW-TV reported. At least 40 shots were fired before the shooters left the scene, according to the television station.
Stanford said that “three or four people” had jumped out of the car, and then shots were fired into a group of people standing on the south side of Allegheny Avenue near the entrance to the Market-Frankford Line rapid transit station, the Inquirer reported. He did not specify how many people were involved in the actual shooting.
Police did not immediately make an arrest, nor did they immediately publicly announce a motive, WCAU-TV reported.
“We have some brazen people in this city that don’t care. They don’t care how many police officers are out here. And some of them don’t care how many people are out here. We continue to do what we need to do to get these individuals in custody,” Stanford said during a news conference. “At this point in time, it just looks like these individuals may have spotted someone they wanted to shoot at, exited the vehicle, and began firing at the group of individuals that were there. We don’t have much more than that in terms of motive.”
An investigation is ongoing.
