Aaron Renel, 39, was charged with attempting to flee an officer, resisting an officer and second-degree recklessly endangering safety, WLUK-TV reported.

According to the Shawano County Sheriff’s Office, the driver of the privately-owned military vehicle was traveling east on State Road 29 with a flat tire at around 5:15 p.m., creating a hazard, the Green Bay Press-Gazette reported.

Following a four-hour standoff during which authorities attempted to negotiate the driver’s exit from the parked vehicle, Renel drove away, crossed the median and drove the wrong way in the westbound lanes of the highway, the newspaper reported.

A deputy operating a snowplow truck ultimately stopped the fleeing vehicle by pinning it to the median, and Renel was removed from the vehicle by force, the Press-Gazette reported.

According to WLUK, a sheriff’s detective quoted in the complaint stated: “We communicated peacefully and respectfully with him with common military experience and understanding, but Aaron believed the truck to be sovereign, and he needed to protect it because it was protected by a declaration of war.”

No one was injured during the incident.
