Veteran RB DeAngelo Williams ready to contribute for Steelers

PITTSBURGH — The Pittsburgh Steelers had an obvious void at backup running back, and that lack of depth cost them in last season's playoffs.

Did the Steelers fill that void with veteran running back DeAngelo Williams? Current Steelers safety and Williams’ former teammate with the Carolina Panthers, Mike Mitchell, believes they have.

"I wouldn't have jumped on the table for him and wrote him a nice personal note on the big board," Mitchell said. "If I didn't believe he couldn't come in here and help us win."

Over nine years with the Panthers, Williams racked up nearly 8,500 yards of total offense.

With Le'Veon Bell facing a three-game suspension at the start of the 2015 season, the Steelers may be leaning on Williams early.

"Whatever they ask me to do here, I'm willing to do it -- whether it's being a starter or being a backup," Williams said. "Whatever they ask me to do, I'm going to do it with everything I got."

Since Williams is getting his first extended look at the Steelers during OTAs, he was asked if anyone had surprised him with their play.

"I'd have to say the O-line," Williams said. "The way that they gel and the way that they play and how they play off of each other and knowing each other’s tendencies and taking up for one another in terms of being where they are supposed to be when they are supposed to be there."

Steelers linebacker James Harrison shared his motivation for the 2015 season.

"My motivation is what people tell me I can't do," Harrison said. "Tell me what I can't do, and I'll do everything I can to prove you wrong."

Williams and the rest of the Steelers will finish their Organized Team Activities Thursday before opening minicamp next Tuesday.
