IRS struggling with budget cuts, staffing shortages, according to new federal audit

2019 was a bad year for the Internal Revenue Service and you probably paid for it.

The IRS has been struggling with budget cuts and staffing shortages along with an increased workload, according to a new federal audit.

The office of taxpayer advocate found the IRS is one of the lowest performing federal agencies for customer service.

The agency answered only 29 percent of the 100 million telephone calls it got last year.

The IRS has also been unable to collect about 380-billion dollars every year in unpaid taxes.

The IRS commissioner said he is focusing on improving enforcement - in both criminal and civil cases - and has asked congress for more money to staff those efforts.
