Heroic dog gets statue for saving child

PANCEVO, SERBIA — A town in northern Serbia has made sure that a dog who died defending a little girl from another dog is not forgotten.

Last year, a raging bull-mastiff cross-breed attacked a 10-year-old girl. A small dachshund named Leo fearlessly jumped in to her rescue, barking and biting at the dog way above his size and strength.

Leo paid for his courage with his life, but citizens in the town of Pancevo have made sure he's not forgotten.

Two weeks ago, a life-size bronze statue of Leo was put up next to a children's playground in Pancevo's city park, honoring the dog and teaching kids all about animal friendship and sacrifice.

Children have been flocking to Leo's monument, patting the statue's head and ears. Many leave dog treats.

The inscription on the monument reads: "To all the small heroes with big hearts."
