PITTSBURGH — Forty-two years ago this week, the Steelers won the first of six Super Bowls.
Interestingly enough, that win in Super Bowl IX came exactly 42 years after the team was founded in 1933.
The Steelers waited a long time to become a perennial contender. In their first 39 years of existence, the Steelers failed to win a single playoff game.
Then, over the course of the next 45 years, they won an amazing 35 postseason games. Those 35 playoffs wins are the most for any NFL team.
The Dallas Cowboys are second with 34 playoff wins and the Green Bay Packers are third with 33.

The Steelers have played in 15 AFC Championship games, more than any AFC team. Only the San Francisco 49ers have played in as many conference championship games.
The Steelers are also first in the NFL with eight Super Bowl appearances, and they remain the only NFL team to win six Super Bowls.
Sunday’s game at Kansas City will be the 59th playoff game for the Steelers. Their all-time playoff record is 35-23. The Steelers have played only one other postseason game in KC, losing in overtime in January of 1994 Wildcard game.
