PITTSBURGH — UPDATE 4 p.m.

Monday was the NFL deadline for teams to reach long-term contracts with certain players.

Here in Pittsburgh, that's Le'Veon Bell.

Bell and the Steelers could not agree on a long-term contract.

Channel 11's Chase Williams reports the Steelers running back will play this year under a franchise tag and become a free agent after the season.

General Manager Kevin Colbert released this statement: "Unfortunately, we were unable to agree to terms on a long-term contract with Le'Veon bell prior to today's deadline. Le'Veon is scheduled to play this year under the exclusive franchise tag designation. We will resume our efforts to address his contract situation following the 2017 season."

Now the question is whether Bell will show up at training camp in Latrobe on July 27.

Contract negotiations between the Pittsburgh Steelers and star running back Le'Veon Bell are down to the wire.

Bell has until 4 p.m. Monday to reach a long-term deal with the Steelers. If a deal is not reached, Bell would likely play the season on the one-year, $12.1 million franchise tag.

Without a long-term deal, Bell could hold out of training camp. He has not yet signed his one-year tender after the Steelers placed the franchise tag on him in March, so he would not be subject to fines, according to NBC Sports ProFootballTalk.

Long-term deals cannot be negotiated after the 4 p.m. deadline until the season ends.
