Tara Lipinski, Johnny Weir to host Olympics closing ceremony for NBC

PYEONGCHANG, South Korea — Tara Lipinski and Johnny Weir, the popular commentators who team up for Olympic figure skating performances, spoke with Channel 11’s Gordon Loesch about Sunday night’s Winter Olympics closing ceremony.

Lipinski and Weir will host NBC’s coverage of the ceremony in South Korea.

“When I got the call, I asked three times: ‘Are you sure? Is this really happening?’” Lipinski said.

Politics are expected to come into play at the closing ceremony, much like during the opening ceremony.

North Korea will send a high-level delegation. However, a South Korean government official said, at this point, it’s unlikely that there will be a meeting between the North Korean and U.S. delegations.

White House adviser Ivanka Trump will lead the U.S. contingent.

Politics aside, Lipinski and Weir are looking forward having fun while carrying out their hosting duties.

“We just do our thing. We're close friends and we keep it really conversational, and we try to teach people something maybe that they don't know and have fun while we're doing it,” Weir said.
