Brief Steelers history

Founded in 1933, the Pittsburgh Steelers are part of the American Football Conference and are the oldest franchise in the conference. The team was originally named the Pittsburgh Pirates after the Major League Baseball team that shared the same city. The football team also adopted the baseball team's colors of black and gold. After being established for a few years, the team decided to change its name and create its own identity. The current name was chosen with the help of fans in a name-the-team contest that ran in a local newspaper. The name of Steelers was a popular choice among fans and was eventually chosen to honor the city's most lucrative business.
