PITTSBURGH,None — The city-county Sports & Exhibition Authority this morning awarded a $2.9 million contract for the demolition of the Civic Arena.
The contract, which went to Noralco Corp. of Penn Hills, went forward despite a federal lawsuit filed Wednesday against the SEA and other city and federal agencies by Preservation Pittsburgh seeking to stop the demolition.
"This appears to be the latest attempt to delay our work," said SEA Executive Director Mary Conturo.
City Council last month refused to grant the arena historic status, clearing the way for the SEA to proceed. The city`s historic review and planning commissions also refused to grant the arena historic status.
Conturo said the demolition company should present a plan on how it would tear down the arena within the next couple of weeks; she added that interior asbestos removal likely would begin next month.
The process should take nine to 12 months, Conturo said.
