Blaze Causes $300K In Damage To Polish Hill Apartment Building

BLOOMFIELD, Pa.,None — A fire caused $300,000 in damage to an apartment building in Polish Hill on Wednesday afternoon.

Six apartments in the Beethoven Street building were damaged, crews said.

When firefighters arrived shortly after 4 p.m., flames could be seen shooting from the roof.

"I smelled smoke. I came outside, saw the back porch was on fire, grabbed my cat, put him in the car and ran back in and started knocking on doors," said neighbor Nelson Totah.

The deputy chief said the fire started on the second floor and quickly spread.

"The building was a difficult fire because (of) its frame. There are very many concealed spaces where the fire can get behind the walls and move up the outside walls," said Deputy Fire Chief Frank Large.

The Red Cross was also helping the people forced out by the fire.
