7 operating room employees at Heritage Valley Beaver test positive for Covid-19

Elective surgery

BEAVER, Pa. — Seven employees of Heritage Valley Beaver’s operating room have tested positive for Covid-19.

The Brighton hospital confirmed the cases and said that another 28 employees of the OR had been tested. Patients were being notified about the Covid-19 infections, but in a statement the hospital said there was low risk of spread because OR staff use full personal protective equipment.

The hospital, which is owned by the Heritage Valley Health System, did not disclose the conditions of the OR employees or the timeline of when the cases were discovered. It blamed growing community spread of the novel coronavirus in western Pennsylvania.

Four of the employees with Covid were determined to have contracted the virus outside the hospital and had not been active in the OR before testing positive, the hospital said. Two more staffers tested positive afterward, and that led the hospital to test 29 more operating room employees that had been around those who were affected.
