CA Ventures reaches agreement with Family House and gets approval for new 10-story apartment building in Oakland

PITTSBURGH — Chicago-based CA Ventures hashed out an agreement with Family House and the Pittsburgh Planning Commission saw no reason to vote no.

So CA Ventures received a unanimous vote from the commission to approve the firm’s plan to redevelop what is now a vacated former Marathon convenience mart at 3500 Forbes Ave. into a new 10-story apartment building expected to take up much of a block, total 296 units and reach 102 feet high.

In late February, the venerable nonprofit Family House, which recently demolished an older building just behind the CA Ventures site at 235 McKee Place expected to be for future development, came forward to oppose the 3500 Forbes project, taking issue with its scale and the potential to overshadow the organization’s site, along with concerns over the pedestrian throughway planned.
