PITTSBURGH — While his long tenure as CEO of UPMC will be known for the astounding growth the Pittsburgh-based health system has seen, Jeffrey Romoff has also been seen as a controversial figure in the Pittsburgh region.
Reviled by the labor movement as well as some community leaders, it has been sometimes quite personal, with Romoff being named in signs and chants over the fight for $15 an hour and unionization of its workers, against its sprawling nonprofit empire, and against the closing of South Side Hospital and Braddock Hospital over the past decade. It also has been an issue in Pittsburgh’s mayoral campaign, with Democratic mayoral candidate Ed Gainey reminding UPMC of its roots and mission.
And that’s not to mention the decadelong battle between UPMC and Highmark over coverage that was concluded only after the intervention of Attorney General Josh Shapiro and the threat of further legal action by the attorney general’s office.
