What’s causing a spike in Duolingo’s English test

PITTSBURGH — The outbreak of Coronavirus across China caused an unexpected spike in the adoption of Pittsburgh-based Duolingo’s English test.

With quarantines and travel bans in place, traditional test-taking centers have shut their doors and canceled their tests since late January.

Duolingo launched its English test in 2016 as an option for students to use for university admissions, among other scenarios. The $49 test, which students take remotely, is meant as an alternative to the typically $200 tests that require appointments and travel to a testing center, said Jennifer Dewar, head of strategic engagement for the Duolingo English test.
