Computer geek ‘migrates to the Cloud' in viral obituary

By all accounts, William Fink was an unabashed computer nerd.

His brother Matthew wrote on Reddit that Fink "ate, slept and breathed computers." So it is only fitting that when it came time to write Fink's obituary, Matthew and a couple of close friends gave it a tech-savvy spin.

The obituary begins by stating that Fink “encountered an unhandled exception in his core operating system, which prematurely triggered a critical ‘STOP’ condition.”

The obituary ends with the following: “Diagnostics indicated multiple cascading hardware failures as the root problem. Though his hardware has been decommissioned, Bill’s application has been migrated to the Cloud and has been repurposed to run in a virtual machine on an infinite loop.

Fink worked as a technical evangelist for Microsoft. In April, he was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. Fink died on Dec. 16 at the age of 46.

According to the Washington Post, his brother said that Fink did not want to be mourned. Instead, he wanted family and friends to gather for a meal at a favorite restaurant to share fond memories. Matthew wrote on Reddit that the obituary, which has gone viral, is the "perfect tribute."
