MILLVALE, Pa.,None — Crews began removing debris from a 50-foot retaining wall that collapsed into Girty's Run in Millvale last week.
A section of the wall came down Thursday night. The Army Corps of Engineers has offered to set up a temporary retaining wall. Engineers are working on finding a permanent fix.
Residents who live near the creek are worried the debris will act as a dam.
"I'm hoping someone gets down here and does something before we run into any problems," Rick Knabel said.
But Knabel was glad to hear officials are working on a temporary fix until a permanent solution can be found.
Officials said they don't know how much it would cost to fix the problem, but are committed to doing it.
"We have a tight budget, especially after the snow removal," borough Manager Virginia Pucci said. "We have our engineer looking at what type of replacement we need. We may do a block wall repair, which our own crew could do or we may have to bid it out for a larger project."
The wall was a federal project built in the 1930s. It is maintained by the borough.
