SHALER TOWNSHIP, Pa.,None — A lawsuit has been against the Diocese of Pittsburgh and Catholic Cemeteries Association of the Diocese of Pittsburgh about two years after a burial that upset a family.
Lisa Carey talked to Channel 11 on Tuesday about the 2009 burial of her grandmother Agnes Zimmick at St. Stanislaus Cemetery in Shaler.
"They just had just put it down in the ground. They were jumping on it, and they had the poles to try to wedge it. It looked they were trying to wedge it down into the spot," said granddaughter Lisa Carey.
The family's attorney, Rich Sandow, filed the lawsuit after a battle to have future burials supervised by a church official.
"The primary purpose was to get them to change their practices," said Sandow.
Sandow said the family was concerned that this happens to other people who are deceased.
The Rev. Ron Lengwin, spokesman for the diocese, referred comment to the cemeteries association, according to our partners at the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review and TribLive.
Annabelle McGannon, executive director of the cemeteries association, said she had not seen the lawsuit but was "very familiar" with a similar complaint the family made to the cemetery.
"The family filed a complaint, and we investigated it thoroughly. We are confident after our investigation that the allegations are unfounded," McGannon said. "Beyond that, it's our policy not to comment on issues in litigation."
The family is seeking monetary damages.
