Fire destroys family's home in Springdale Township

A Springdale Township family was displaced Friday after fire destroyed their home of 22 years on Friday.

The fire was reported around 11:30 a.m. in the 800 block of Thompson Run Road. The family who lives there was not home at the time, and there were no reported injuries. Officials said the residents found out that their home was on fire while they were at work and school.

The Springdale fire chief said crews arrived at the scene minutes after the fire broke out. The chief said he knew that going inside was not an option, and that call might have saved lives because the roof collapsed afterward.

The house was on a steep hill, and ice and muddy conditions made firefighters' jobs difficult. Crews had to stretch a line 200 feet to get water to the house.

The siding of a neighboring abandoned home was damaged, but crews kept the flames from spreading.

Amber Klupson, who lives across the street, says she's thankful that her neighbors are OK.

"I was worried about the family that could have been here," Klumpson said.

Officials said they are contacting the American Red Cross to see if the organization can help the family.
