Flames cause extensive damage to Hazelwood home; No one hurt

PITTSBURGH — No one was injured Thursday when a home in Pittsburgh’s Hazelwood neighborhood went up in flames, officials said.

Firefighters were called just after 6 p.m. to the scene of the fire on East Elizabeth Street. Chopper 11 was overhead as flames and thick smoke shot from the second and third floors of the home.

Authorities said no one was home at the time of the fire, which crews were able to contain to the single home. The fire and smoke damage, though, was extensive.

"The smoke was really billowing,” neighbor Arland Grace said.

Neighbors said the fire went from light smoke to fully engulfed within seconds.

"It kind of looks like it's really crazy, but they had a very quick response,” Grace said.

Fire officials said it's unclear on how the fire started, and a cause is under investigation.
