PITTSBURGH,None — Law enforcement agencies in Westmoreland County are investigating a large number of counterfeit bills.
Officials said the fake bills are made by washing a $1 bill until the image fades, then printing a higher number marking onto the bill.
Police in Latrobe, Greensburg, Kiski and member of the United States secret service are involved in the investigation.
State trooper Steve Limani said the bills are a huge problem.
"The problem with what they're doing is, it still passes the pen test because they're printing this on real money," Limani said. "A clerk might get this dollar bill and swipe a pen across it real quick see that it changes colors the way it's supposed to and take it for a real $100 bill or real $50 bill."
So far police have made only two arrests. John Herdman and Jennifer Liggett were arrested and accused of using fake bills at the Greensburg Shop ‘N Save, officials said.
Anyone with information on the counterfeit bills is asked to contact police.
