PWSA customer receives $5 million bill, says ‘there must be gold in my water'

PITTSBURGH — A woman who lives in Pittsburgh's Brighton Heights neighborhood recently received a shockingly high bill from the Pittsburgh Water and Sewer Authority that said she owed more than $5 million.

"The required payment of $5,075,567 will satisfy the less than 90-day past due balance and is payable directly to PWSA," the termination notice said.

Mindy Rice has lived in the Brighton Heights house with her family for the past 13 years and said she is used to paying between $75 and $80 a month.

"We laughed. The whole family laughed," Rice told Target 11's Rick Earle of her family's reaction to the bill. "Never $5 million. Never. Like I said, there must be gold in my water."

Target 11 reached out to the PWSA after Rice said she called but got no response. They admitted that it was their mistake.
