Kennywood Opens; Learn How To Get Discounted Tickets

WEST MIFFLIN, Pa.,None — Kennywood's team members worked hard to prepare the park for the kick off of the 2011 summer season.

Over the past few months, the park was busy with off-season projects as crews completed upgrades to several parts of the park in anticipation of its 114th season.

Ride testing, team member training and finishing touches on new construction projects were just a few of the highlights leading up to opening day.

"This season will focus on improvements to further enhance the guest experience," explains General Manager Jerome Gibas. "We're looking forward to opening the gates for another great season."

The excitement begins in Kiddieland where a brand new building will offer convenience and comfort to both parents and kiddies alike. Gone are the days when parents had to leave Kiddieland in search of juice, fruit and other treats to keep the kids fueled up for more riding and fun.

A beautiful, new midway constructed of brick pavers leads parents right up to the counter of Kenny Kangaroo's newest snack option located right in the middle of Kiddieland. Healthy food choices give parents plenty of alternatives when the kiddies need a break from all the cotton candy.

Follow the new midway around to a patio where families can relax, snack and wave to the passengers on the Olde Kennywood Railroad as it goes rolling down the tracks. To offer even more convenience, a brand new set of family restrooms offers changing tables and everything else a family might need to enjoy a day in Kiddieland.

Kennywood's historic Parkside Café, built in 1898, will be even more welcoming on those hot summer days. Aside from a wide selection of delicious food, the Parkside Café will now feature cool, comfortable air conditioning, as well as larger and improved restroom facilities.

Admission to the park increased by $1 this year, but park spokesman Jeff Filiko said you can still save.

"Families are little more sensitive with their discretionary spending now because of gas prices and the economy. We're sensitive to that which is why we try to offer discounts."

Some ways to save include:

Purchasing "Funday" gate passes at Giant Eagle grocery stores for $25.99, which offers a savings of $11.

Parents can also buy tickets at their children's schools for $22.

On certain days, the park offers $10 admission for anyone who goes to the park with a Kennywood season pass holder.

Groups of 20 or more can get into the park for $15 if they attend the park at night.

You can also save $10 a ticket or win free tickets by becoming a fan of Kennywood on Facebook.

Filiko said regardless of when you plan to visit the park, with a little planning you should never have to pay full price at the gate.

The daily season began May 19. Gates open at 10:30 a.m. and rides begin at 11 a.m.
