PITTSBURGH,None — Allegheny River traffic north and east of Pittsburgh will be interrupted for 15 days while the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers makes $1.6 million worth of repairs to Lock and Dam No. 2 near Highland Park.
Locks and dams upriver will operate normally, but the lock that closed Monday through Sept. 27 will prevent barge traffic, pleasure boaters and others from traveling in or out of the city on the Allegheny. The Allegheny joins with the Monongahela River to form the Ohio River that flows westward out of Pittsburgh.
Locks are cement chambers that can be filled or emptied of water, enabling boats to travel around dams that control the river's flow rate and depth.
Army Corps officials say the 75-year-old locks have a service life of 50 years and are in critical need of repairs.
