The last of 16 giant lock gates was installed on the Pacific Ocean side. The gate weighs 4200 tons and was the last major piece to be put in place before crews can flood the locks. The expansion project was started in 2006 and is expected to open in April 2016. The new locks will accommodate ships carrying two and a half times the number of containers current ships using the canal can hold.
