WASHINGTON COUNTY, Pa.,None — A Washington County couple will appear on the TLC network's show "Extreme Couponing."
The couple spoke to Channel 11 News on Wednesday. They said they save thousands of dollars per year by using coupons at the grocery store.
Chris and Ashley Duff said they considering couponing an extreme sport that they have mastered.
"Say a toothbrush is free and you can get one by clipping a newspaper [coupon]. We want to clip 20 newspapers so you get 20 toothbrushes," Chris Duff said.
The Duffs said they spend six to 10 hours a week clipping coupons. They said their average monthly grocery bill is $30 to $50. The couple said they have four secrets to their savings.
The first is staying organized. The Duffs said they have two binders. One binder is for groceries, and one is for healthy and beauty items.
"We got them in these nine pocket dividers so you can actually see the coupon and when it expires," said Ashley Duff.
The Duffs said their second secret is stocking up on Sunday newspapers. They said they buy 20 to 30 papers each week.
"This is the key for unlocking the savings for your bottom line," Chris Duff said.
Third on their list of secrets is to pay attention to weekly circulars. The Duffs said most people just throw them away.
"You use this and go through and look at the items that are currently on sale during the week, and then you match it up with your coupons. So, you take a retail price, you put it on sale, you hit it with a coupon. That's a rock-bottom price," Ashley Duff said.
Lastly, the Duffs said you should always stick to the coupons and items on your list.
"You do that for a month, and you'll see a tremendous difference in your grocery bill. You'll be saving upwards of 50 percent or better," Ashley Duff said.
The Duffs said they also use coupons to purchase items for local charities.
