WEST VIEW, Pa. — A toddler was hospitalized late Monday night after she fell out of a window in West View.
Police said the incident happened at a home on Perry Highway just before 9 p.m.
The child's mother, Mary Grace Hilty, said 19-month-old Olivia was playing with her 2 ½ year-old brother on a couch that was against a window when she pushed through a window screen and fell 15 feet onto a driveway below.
“The couch was closer to the wall, and she apparently pushed on the screen,” Hilty said. “She has scrapes on her fingers and on her knees, but thank God she’s fine.”
Hilty said Olivia landed on a plastic trash barrel, and she thinks that’s what saved her life.
“It’s a miracle,” Hilty said. “By the grace of God, she’s doing fine in the hospital.”
Paramedics said Olivia was conscious and alert when they arrived. She did not appear to be seriously hurt.
Olivia spent the night in Children’s Hospital. Officials said by Tuesday afternoon she was ready to go home.
Hilty told Channel 11 News she plans to put safety guards over the screens and wants to warn other parents about the dangers of playing near a window.
“Pull everything away from the window because these little guys don’t know what’s going on,” Hilty said. “I just thank god Olivia is OK.”
