2 men facing drug, weapons charges following Upper St. Clair home invasion

PITTSBURGH — Two men were arraigned Thursday night on drug and weapons charges after they were arrested following a massive manhunt in Pittsburgh’s Hays neighborhood and Baldwin.

John Trowery and Kevin Caldwell were both picked up in Baldwin Thursday morning after a “be on the lookout” call went out following a home invasion in Upper St. Clair.

Police said Trowery and Caldwell matched the description given of those suspects.

Officers said they chased Trowery through traffic on Baldwin Road, stunned him with a Taser and handcuffed him.

Meanwhile, Caldwell was found in an abandoned railroad building, police said.

The “be on a lookout call” went out after a homeowner on Walther Lane in Upper St. Clair told police that two men forced their way into his home through the back door. When the homeowner confronted them, they took off in an SUV.

“It was so quiet and peaceful, and I just didn't expect anything like this really to happen. I guess it happens everywhere,” said Mike McCaffrey, who lives across the street from the site of the home invasion.

McCaffrey said this home invasion was the second on Walther Lane in recent months.

The victim in the attack refused Channel 11’s request for an interview but posted his thoughts about the encounter on his Facebook page Friday.

“If I did not have a loaded gun, my family and I would be in a lot of trouble right now,” he wrote, in part.

In regards to his 18-year-old son who went after the masked intruders, the victim wrote, “(He) suffered some head trauma falling on the sidewalk. His CAT scan came back negative. Thank you for your thoughts and prayers.”

Neither Trowery nor Caldwell is currently facing any charges in direct relation to the home invasion, but they are charged with having stolen guns, drugs and large amounts of cash.
