30th Street Bridge closes for construction

PITTSBURGH — A small section of River Avenue is now closed, between the 30th and 31st Street Bridges as the first phase of the 30th Street Bridge project begins and continues to July 5.

Drivers are anticipating the worst.

“It’s going to be significant I’m sure. We’ll wait and see today, that’ll give me a good indication of what this wait is going to be like on the island. And I hope they time the lights to let people off the island,” Gerard DeCarolis from Turtle Creek said.

The 30th Street Bridge is down to one lane.

The sidewalk is also blocked off.

The 30th Street Bridge is the only access to Washington’s Landing, where there are condos and businesses.

DeCarolis works here and is keeping his sense of humor.

“This is the only way on and off the island, unless you want to take a ferry or bring your canoe,” DeCarolis said.

And for the duration of the project, there is no vehicle access between River Avenue, 30th Street and the intersection with Route 28, 31st Street Bridge or Rialto Street.

So all vehicles are being detoured along River Avenue to General Robinson Street to Route 28.

The $1.8 dollar construction project will replace the expansion joints, install a new concrete overlay on the deck, sidewalks and railings will be repaired and lighting will be upgraded

The city says construction is expected to wrap up in early October before the Head of the Ohio Regatta.
