31st Street Bridge/Route 28 interchange reopens

PITTSBURGH — The 31st Street Bridge and Route 28 interchange in Allegheny County reopened Monday morning, Pennsylvania Department of Transportation officials said.

The Route 28 ramps in both directions at the 31st Street Bridge opened to traffic just after 9 a.m. Monday, officials said.

"PennDOT is pleased to open the 31st Bridge to Route 28 as this puts us a step closer to finishing this important regional project," District Executive Dan Cessna, P.E. said. "The completion of the grade-separated interchange allows free flow traffic, easing congestion on Route 28 and provides access to the 31st Bridge and Washington's Landing."

The work was part of the more than $36 million Route 28 improvement project.

“It’s exciting. After three years, it’s very nice,” driver George Kenny said.

In addition to work at the bridge, there have been sidewalk improvements and new signals installed.

"I think it's great and kudos to all the guys and girls who worked really hard to make it happen,” driver Barb Grabowski said.

Even though the bridge will reopen, Rialto Street will remain closed through the winter months.
