Family escapes through bedroom window after kitchen fire

BALDWIN, Pa. — A family of five had to climb through a bedroom window to escape a kitchen fire early Saturday morning.

Fire crews were called just before 3 a.m. to The Alden complex on Youngridge Drive in Baldwin. Chia Hampton said she was sleeping when her 16-year-old daughter was cooking chicken tenders and it caught fire.

Hampton said her son woke her up and she saw the smoke and flames.

“It was real, real, real thick smoke at first. Like you couldn’t see nothing. It’s like a foggy day. And you couldn’t see nothing and then it was like, you could see the flames, like just, you could see that they were just out of control. I couldn’t do anything about it," she said.

Hampton and her four children climbed out of a bedroom window to safety. She said their clothes and furniture are ruined and the fire made their apartment unlivable.

The family is now staying with a neighbor.
