University of Dayton graduate from Pittsburgh killed in accident hours after receiving degree

DAYTON, Ohio — The medical examiner in Dayton, Ohio, confirmed that Ian Brunner, a Pittsburgh native and University of Dayton student, died Sunday evening, just hours after he graduated.

Officials say Brunner, 22, was working underneath his vehicle when the car fell on top of him, with his jack stuck underneath.

Channel 11 has obtained the dramatic 911 call of someone trying to save him.

Caller: “He is unresponsive we need assistance immediately. Like fast!

911 dispatcher: “They are on the way.”

Caller: “OK.”

911 dispatcher: “But did you get the jack up?”

Caller: “No, we did not. He is still underneath, we cannot get him out, he is stuck.”

911 dispatcher: “They are coming OK? Keep trying.”

Caller: “OK, OK, we are trying…”

On Sunday evening around 7 p.m., emergency responders were called to student housing on Irving Avenue, located on the University of Dayton’s campus.

When Dayton police arrived, officials say in the parking lot, they found a black two-door car and Brunner was underneath.

Officials say that Brunner was working on his car when his jack slipped. The car fell with both Brunner and the jack stuck under it.

A day of celebration is now marked by tragedy, as Brunner, a senior at the university, had graduated with a degree in mechanical engineering just hours before.

Monday morning, students, faculty and friends gathered to honor his life.

The university sent a statement to fellow students and faculty members:

“We extend our deepest sympathy and prayers to Ian’s family, friends, faculty, staff, and our entire campus community.

“Campus ministers, the dean of students office, housing and residence life, and counseling staff are available.”

The family has asked for privacy at this time and has not released any funeral details.
