Angelo Giorno, 4, on life support after July organ transplant; family asks for prayers

PITTSBURGH — Two months after receiving an intestinal transplant, Angelo Giorno’s family is asking for continued thoughts and prayers as he has been placed on life support.

On Wednesday, Angelo's family told Channel 11's news exchange partners at TribLIVE that he is heavily sedated and on life support in an intensive care unit at Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh.

A Facebook message posted Tuesday on Angelo's Transplant Page said he was in critical but stable condition. He is fighting adenovirus.

TribLIVE was told that Angelo, 4, of Derry, is unable to move or communicate and a respirator is helping him breathe.

Both Angelo and Lucas Goeller, 2, of Indiana Township, received organs from 3-year-old Olivia Swedberg, from Nebraska, after she died of brain cancer. Lucas received Olivia's liver by direct donation from her family.

Angelo's transplant was needed due to a digestive disorder called short bowel syndrome. His recovery had been going well, with doctors describing it as "miraculous" in July.

However, according to TribLIVE, Angelo went back to the hospital in mid-August after being discharged at the end of July. Follow-up tests raised concerns, and he has been in intensive care since Friday.
