ROSS TOWNSHIP, Pa. — Police in Ross Township are warning residents about an increased number of criminals going door-to-door.
Authorities said the gypsy contractors are looking for homes in need of roof repairs or driveway repaving. They offer to make repairs at a discount, but it’s merely a scheme.
Officials said often times one person will distract the homeowner while another sneaks into the home and steals jewelry and other valuables.
"They'll usually say, 'We were in the area and have some extra product.' They'll offer to give you a deal. One of the first things you need to do is see if they have a permit to solicit in the area they're in," Ross Township Police Det. Brian Kohlhepp said.
Only companies registered with the Attorney General’s Officer should be dealt with, officials said.
Police said if a suspicious person comes to your door and tries selling goods or services, call 911.
