Two customers inside the shop were hurt. A man who was pinned between a wall and the van managed to free himself.  He suffered leg, rib and chest injuries.

"If I'd have taken one more step, I'd have been in front of the van," said owner Tim Smith.

A woman suffered an ankle injury. Both were taken to the hospital in stable condition. The driver of the van was not injured.

Police told Channel 11's Jennifer Tomazic the driver thought he saw a car in front of him, so he went into the other lane to pass it. When he saw an oncoming car, he panicked and drove the van through the building.

"I couldn't believe it. It was literally unreal," said customer Rose Bohram, who lives nearby.

Steuben Street was closed in that area for about two hours while crews removed the van. It reopened just before 10 a.m.

The driver will face charges of reckless driving.
