Clairton HS football team apologizing for post-championship game behavior

CLAIRTON, Pa. — The Clairton High School football team is apologizing for unsportsmanlike behavior displayed after its state championship loss.

Following the Bears' 19-18 loss to Bishop Guilfoyle in Hershey in December, some players threw helmets and walked off the field.

"This could be an ugly situation," an announcer said.

According to the Tribune-Review, former Pittsburgh Steeler Charlie Batch recently spoke to the team about sportsmanship and asked if they would make an online apology.

The Bears subsequently issued the following apology: "We would like to extend our apology and congratulations to Bishop Guilfoyle for the 2014 PIAA championship. Congratulations."

The Tribune-Review reported that the PIAA will meet later this month to determine if Clairton will be penalized.
