PITTSBURGH — Firefighters responded to a fire at a restaurant in downtown Pittsburgh Saturday evening.
The fire broke out in the vents in the kitchen at Morton's The Steakhouse on Liberty Avenue shortly before 5 p.m., according to Allegheny County 911. Heavy smoke had been seen in the area.
"Someone from the restaurant did say there was a fire in the kitchen, and we found the fire in the ventilation ductwork," said Pittsburgh Deputy Fire Chief Harry Scherer. "The ventilation system itself had to be dismantled to gain access to extinguish the fire."
Channel 11's Shelby Zarotney reported that the fire was out shortly before 6 p.m.
Beth Norman and Greg Norman had planned to celebrate 26 years together over dinner at the restaurant.
"We just walked by. The street was blocked off because we were going to check to see where it was and so we looped around, and walked over there and said we can't walk there," said Greg Norman.
The restaurant had not yet opened at the time of the fire, but employees were evacuated. No injuries were reported.
