WASHINGTON COUNTY, Pa. — The Donora-Webster Bridge that once connected Washington and Westmoreland Counties was imploded Wednesday.
The 110-year-old bridge over the Monongahela River had been closed since 2009 because it was deteriorating.

The implosion took place on schedule at 10 a.m., when 387 charges from 72 lbs. of explosives sent the debris into the river below.
People found places along both sides to watch the implosion.
"It's sad, but it's a necessary evil I guess because it's expensive to keep bridges up," Aaron Craig said.
A crane was brought in to begin removing the debris. Travel on the Monongahela River will be restricted through Thursday morning.
There are no plans to build a new bridge.
