“Her son and his girlfriend came out of the house and that’s when I asked him if his mom was there and he said, ‘yeah, he couldn’t get to her,’” Steinmetz recalled.

Pittsburgh police officers were first to the scene.

They tried to rescue the woman, but couldn’t make it through all the smoke.

Moments later, Pittsburgh firefighters arrived.

“Our folks were on scene very fast, and they went to work immediately, and quickly located this woman, removed her from the building,” said

Asst. Fire Chief Brian Kokkila, who was at the scene of the fire.

Channel 11 Exclusive doorbell camera footage shows first responders carrying the elderly woman out of the home to safety.

“They had to lay her on the ground and we got her some blankets. She was scared and crying and they just kept reassuring her that it was okay and everybody was okay,” said Steinmetz.

Officials tell 11 News the woman was taken to the hospital to be checked out for smoke inhalation, along with her son and his girlfriend.

According to neighbors, the son and girlfriend have been released and are staying with a friend, while the man’s mother remains in the hospital for observation. They say she’s expected to be released Thursday.

“She’s just the sweetest lady,” said Steinmetz. “She always has a flower in her hair. She’s always just very sweet when she sees you. I wish them all well. They’ll be back.”

Two police officers also went to the hospital for smoke inhalation, but the city reports that both have since been released.

Kokkila is praising his firefighters for their heroic rescue.

“Couldn’t be prouder,” he said.  “They absolutely did their job to a T.”

Meanwhile, the quiet neighborhood where it happened is grateful that, in the toughest of times, help will be there in a moment’s notice.

“[I’m] thankful that we have such great police and fire and EMS in the City of Pittsburgh,” said Steinmetz. “You hear so much bad these days and they were all great. They were all fantastic.”
