Fort Cherry Ambulance Service no longer serving 8 Washington Co. communities

WASHINGTON COUNTY, Pa. — The Fort Cherry Ambulance Service will no longer be working in eight Washington County communities. All but one of those communities have been able to make other arrangements.

Tom Brown, the mayor of Bentleyville, said he’s afraid for his citizens who call 911 in an emergency after March 5.

“If you are teetering on the edge and need to be rushed to the hospital, it could be a life or death situation,” he said.

A lawyer for Fort Cherry Ambulance Service told Channel 11 that the decision to stop service was a financial one, because the population and the traffic did not warrant maintaining a facility in that area.

Brown said his town will rely heavily on the Bentleyville Fire Department, starting March 6.

“We do have a great fire department, first responders. They are there in a moment’s notice, but they can't transport,” said Brown.

Bentleyville’s council will discuss the ambulance situation next Tuesday.

One last ambulance service is considering taking the job, and the council remains hopeful that they will come through.
