Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank marks start of Hunger Action Month

DUQUESNE, Pa. — The Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank is marking the start of Hunger Action Month as food banks across southwestern Pennsylvania continue to see increased demand.

The food bank said it is serving more people than ever over the past year, even more than during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Here in Southwest Pennsylvania, one in eight of our neighbors are food insecure,” said Jennifer Miller of the Westmoreland Food Bank. “One in eight may not know where their next meal is coming from.”

Over the past 12 months, the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank and Westmoreland Food Bank have served 59 million meals.

Julie Bancroft of Feeding Pennsylvania said food banks are facing increased pressure while having fewer resources.

“Our network is being asked to do more with less,” Bancroft said. “Federal policy changes, including the implementation of HR1, and particularly changes to SNAP are increasing the burden on families and placing even more pressure on the charitable food system.”

Hunger Action Month is recognized across the country and was established in 2008 by Feeding America.

Charlese McKinney of the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank encouraged people to get involved by volunteering or advocating for those facing hunger.

“Find a way to be part of the solution,” McKinney said. “Volunteer your time. Use your voice to advocate for our neighbors.”
