WESTMORELAND COUNTY, Pa. — Students, teachers and staff of a Westmoreland County elementary school were evacuated Friday after a possible gas leak.
According to officials, West Point Elementary, in the Hempfield Area School District, was evacuated around 11 a.m.
Because the district was on a two-hour delay Friday, officials said the students never got off their school busses.
Emergency officials said they moved everyone to Wendover Middle School, located at 425 Arthur Drive.
Parents were permitted to pick their children up at Wendover Middle, or they would have be bused home at their normal time.
The district told Channel 11’s Joe Holden they felt it was best to dismiss the students from Wendover.
"Out of precaution, we evacuated the students. The building's been cleared, but as a further precaution, we're sending the children home,” said Audrey Dell, West Point’s principal.
Hempfield Area School District officials said the source of the odor was determined to be some gasoline that spilled from a ventilation system. Officials explained that the odor then circulated through the school’s heating and ventilation system.
