PITTSBURGH — It’s been a month since a shuttered Mt. Washington Church caught fire. But the building still hasn’t been demolished.

Initially, the demolition permit was supposed to be issued in late July. Pittsburgh councilwoman Kim Salinetro tells Channel 11 the demolition has been held up by the contractor’s insistence that the tear-down happen overnight.
She says the city will not let that happen because neighbors will be trying to sleep. Because of this dispute, Salinetro says the permit has not been approved, and a demolition date has not been set.
The church’s contractor tells Channel 11 he proposed a nighttime demolition to avoid pedestrians walking around the city. He says he’s since agreed to tear down the building during the day, and his engineer is tweaking their plans to submit to the city on Monday.
The contractor complained that the city has been slow to respond to him throughout the demolition permit process.
He expects it will take another three to four days after the plans are resubmitted for demolition to begin.
