How to prepare for heavy autumn rainfall

We’ve been enjoying the gorgeous fall foliage the last several weeks, and you have probably noticed many of the leaves are now covering our lawns and clogging drains and gutters, which could be a big problem due to the potential heavy rainfall on Friday.

Ahead of the rain, we have one more beautiful day left to get out and get our fall cleanups underway. Leaves are dry and lightweight right now, and easier to remove than when they are wet and heavy. However, leaves building up in drains on top of heavy rainfall could cause flooding issues along busy roads and cause hydroplaning.

Another place you may not immediately think about is the gutters in your homes. You’ll want to make sure to clear gutters to avoid water buildup. This can cause damage to your gutter and cause water to leak into your home. With temperatures falling below freezing this weekend, water buildup could turn to ice or slush and could even bring down gutters in your home.

These are just some tips to prepare for the wet weather ahead and to get ready for the upcoming winter season. I’m Meteorologist Stephanie Allison for Severe Weather Team 11.
